Can you compensate for all that sitting by exercising in the evening? (no..)

--

You sit all day, but you comfort yourself: I regularly exercise in the evening. So sitting there doesn’t matter.

Although regular exercise offers many health benefits, studies suggest that simply exercising in the evening does not completely offset all the negative effects of sitting for long periods of time during the day.

A study published in the “Journal of Applied Physiology” showed that even an hour of intense treadmill exercise could not reverse the decreased vascular function caused by sitting all day.

Additionally, another study explains that sitting for long periods of time is itself a risk factor for several chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and that movement throughout the day, in addition to regular exercise, is important. Think of:

  • taking short walking breaks,
  • standing instead of sitting when possible,
  • using a standing desk.

More than just 30 minutes of exercise is needed to contrast the effects of a sedentary lifestyle. It is therefore advisable to exercise regularly and reduce the amount of time spent sitting.
