The three bodies found by Mexican authorities are most likely those of the American and two Australian surfers who went missing last week. A senior official from the region said this on Saturday.

“All three bodies meet the criteria to identify American Carter Rhoad as the Robinson brothers from Australia,” Baja California Attorney General Maria Elena Andrade said.

Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend Jack Carter Rhoad were last seen at a popular surf spot in northern Baja last weekend, American media report. When the Australians did not show up at their previously booked Airbnb and the American remained absent from work in San Diego, the search began. In addition, the car that the three had rented was found burned out.

In the days following the disappearance, local authorities arrested three people believed to be connected to the case.

The coast of Baja California is a popular surfing destination, but is also plagued by violent drug cartels. There are many smuggling routes used by the cartels to reach the US, but tourist spots are generally considered safer than other parts.
