DJ Dimitri received a royal award on Sunday. Deputy Mayor Touria Meliani of Amsterdam appointed him a knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau. The founder of Dutch house and techno music performed in Paradiso to celebrate his fortieth anniversary as a DJ.

Dimitri Kneppers, as the artist is actually called, received the ribbon for his important contribution to Dutch dance music. In the 1980s, DJ Dimitri laid the foundation for today’s house and techno music in the then Amsterdam nightclub RoXY.

He was the first Dutch DJ given the opportunity to play in New York and also produced records by other artists.

The royal decoration is awarded to persons who have made personal contributions to society, the Dutch State or the Royal House for a long time.
