The world famous Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci may get its own space in the Louvre in Paris. The management and the French Ministry of Culture are discussing options to better exhibit the portrait.

The small painting attracts more than twenty thousand visitors every day, who often also take a selfie. The management would like a separate room. “It’s always frustrating when conditions aren’t quite right, and that’s the case with the Mona Lisa“, the Louvre director said on French radio.

The Mona Lisa hangs in the largest room of the museum, opposite the largest painting in the Louvre: Wedding at Cana by Paolo Veronese.

A maximum of 30,000 visitors per day has been introduced and that limit will be maintained during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris later this year.

The Mona Lisa was targeted by climate activists at the beginning of this year. They threw soup, but the glass-protected portrait was not damaged.
