Titanic– and The Lord of the Ringsactor Bernard Hill has passed away. The BBC reported this on Sunday. The British actor is 79 years old. Hill’s cause of death has not been released.

Bernard Hill’s first major role was as Yosser Hughes in Boys from the Blackstuff. But Hill is best known for his portrayal of King Theoden in the Lord of the Ringstrilogy by Peter Jackson. He also played Edward Smith, the captain Titanic awaits his fate at the helm of the ship until the icy seawater breaks through the window.

Hill had just completed filming a new TV series. He played a role opposite Martin Freeman in the second season of The responder, the first episode of which can be seen on BBC on Sunday evening.

Eleven Oscars

The actor did not win any Academy Awards himself, but starred in two films that each won eleven Oscars: Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Hill is survived by a wife and a son.
