episode ‘The throwaway society’

As the call for sustainability and the preservation of our planet grows louder, we face a crucial challenge: how do we fix our broken consumer society?
Come and discuss this during this Tegenlicht Meetup in Zuidhorn! Climate mayor of the municipality of Westerkwartier Sjors van Broekhuizen is our discussion leader this evening.

In an era in which we want to keep our carbon footprint as low as possible, there is no point in unbridled consumption. How can we transform from a consumer society to a sustainable society?

We need to put an end to the enormous waste that today’s consumer society entails, but how do we do it? Can designers play a role in this or do they only get in the way of sustainability? And should we place the responsibility on the consumer? After flight and meat shame, isn’t it time for a good dose of product shame?

About the episode
VPRO Tegenlicht delves into this pressing issue and follows fanatical citizens, adventurous entrepreneurs, top designers and mega recyclers who are all working towards a world without disposable junk.

In this broadcast, Tegenlicht examined the dilemma between design and sustainability and its impact on our planet. Do you make a product for 100 years or for 2 years? And are we prepared to pay the real price for such a product that will last 100 years?
