Burglars struck most often in Nijmegen last year. 287 reports of a burglary or attempted burglary were made. There were also many incidents in Apeldoorn (265) and Arnhem (233) in 2023.
According to research, burglars struck 2,339 times in Gelderland in 2023. During 79.1% of these incidents, criminals managed to actually gain entry and steal property. The other registered reports only involved a burglary attempt. Last year 79.1% of burglary attempts in Gelderland were successful: in these cases, burglars managed to enter the home and steal something.
Particular success in zip codes with cheaper housing
In 2023, burglars were most often successful in homes with a lower WOZ value. In postal codes where houses have an average WOZ of up to 200,000 euros, burglars are successful in 78.2%. In homes with a WOZ of 200,000 to 250,000, this even concerns 78.9% of the incidents. By comparison: in postal codes with mainly expensive homes (of 750,000 or more), ‘only’ 73.9% of burglary attempts are successful.
Home insurance expert Michel Ypma: “Even if the attempted burglary fails, I always recommend reporting it to the police. They then know that thieves are active in that area, but it is also necessary for your own insurance. If you want to recover burglary damage from the insurer, a declaration is required.”
