In Brabant’s countryside, it is estimated that more than 10,000 people are active as volunteers on a weekly or monthly basis. Managed by various green organizations such as Brabants Landschap and IVN Natuuronderwijs, they are committed to flora and fauna. 10,000 seems like a lot, but new growth is desirable. On the one hand, because the group of green volunteers is getting older on average. Who will take over from them next? On the other hand, nature’s biodiversity is in danger. Many (green) organizations and volunteers are committed to turning the tide. The province of North Brabant supports them in various ways.

A lot of work done

Green volunteers do a lot of work. They inventory all kinds of species. They provide tens of thousands of observations that are of great benefit to the province. And they roll up their sleeves when it comes to landscape management, for example pollarding willows.
It is also very important to increase support for nature policy. Volunteers discuss this with farmers and landowners they visit. There are people who provide education and lectures, organize excursions, write books or produce newsletters.
