The NPO has decided to withdraw the second and third fines imposed on aspiring broadcaster Ongehoord Nederland. The NPO reported this on Thursday. The decision follows from discussions between the NPO and Ongehoord Nederland about how cooperation within the system should continue.

The NPO previously asked then State Secretary Gunay Uslu (Media) to revoke the broadcaster’s license. But Uslu rejected this request. By withdrawing the sanctions, the NPO Ongehoord Nederland wants to give ‘more room to meet the requirements imposed on all public broadcasters’.

Unheard Netherlands received the second fine because, according to the NPO, the broadcaster did not want to cooperate sufficiently. The third fine was imposed because, according to the NPO, the broadcaster did not adhere to the NPO journalistic code and spread incorrect information.

A first sanction was previously imposed for this offense. This one will remain standing. The purpose of this is ‘to allow the court to assess the scope of the NPO’s authority when making decisions based on the article in the Media Act on insufficient willingness to cooperate in the systematic disregard of the Journalism Code’, the NPO reports. in a statement. This procedure is now before the administrative court.

The NPO emphasizes that it expects the broadcaster to continue to adhere to the journalistic code and ‘choose an attitude that contributes to cooperation with all other parties within public broadcasting’. Broadcasting chairman Arnold Karskens said on Thursday that the decision ‘once again proves how hopeless the NPO’s mission was to eliminate Ongehoord Nederland from the system’. He speaks of an ‘unjustified attack by the NPO on our broadcaster that has led to major reputational damage and cost hundreds of thousands of euros in legal defense’.

Transgressive behavior during consultations

This site recently reported that the conflict between Ongehoord Nederland and the NPO had reached a new low. Unheard Netherlands chairman Arnold Karskens and NPO boss Frederieke Leeflang have accused each other of transgressive behavior since their most recent meeting, according to a letter obtained by this site.

Karskens is said to have been attacked ‘orally and physically’ by NPO chairman Frederieke Leeflang and, conversely, there is talk of a ‘threatening and intimidating attitude’ by the boss of the right-wing broadcaster. The incident took place on March 6 during a meeting intended to resolve a dispute.
