The new lock in Terneuzen will be festively opened in October. This is one of the most important infrastructure works in the history of the port of Ghent. The new lock, which was named the North Sea Locks, will ensure that large sea-going vessels can enter the port. And that is good for companies, because it means that more goods can be transported by sea. In 2017, the first shovel was dug in Terneuzen. The works were somewhat delayed due to PFOS contamination, obstacles in the subsurface and the corona crisis. But after 7 years of work, the lock will finally be ready in October. In the meantime, the costs have risen to more than one billion euros. Our country pays the largest share of this.
