In the year that she lived in Spain, Princess Amalia was “able to find more freedom” than was possible in the Netherlands. The princess spoke for the first time about her time in Spain on King’s Day. Amalia lived and studied in Madrid for a year because of threats in the Netherlands.

The news came out earlier this month. She now lives in the Netherlands again. “I was able to find my freedom there a little more than was possible here,” Amalia said in Emmen on Saturday. The princess had “a fantastic time” in Spain, despite the fact that the move took place “due to certain circumstances”. The time in Spain has made “life here somewhat possible again,” says Amalia. “I’m happy to be back.”

Queen Máxima said on Saturday that Amalia is an “independent girl and very smart”, “so she can handle it very well”. The queen granted her daughter “the freedom and wings that you must give a child to develop itself.” However, there were “tears and a smile” at every departure.
