Safety zones apply at high-risk companies, such as an ammonia terminal. Calculations are made of the risks and these produce circles within which certain developments, such as the construction of homes or hospitals, are prohibited. For example, the ammonia terminal could also put a brake on the construction of new residential areas in the villages near the Sloe area.
It was previously announced that the Zeeland Safety Region (VRZ) also sees problems. After the construction of the terminal, more trains carrying ammonia will run through Zeeland. “If you really start to have large transport flows of ammonia, we do not like them going through the cities and our villages towards the hinterland,” a VRZ employee told Omroep Zeeland last month. The VRZ advocates transport in tubes.
The municipality of Borssele and the village councils of the villages around the Sloe area, Ritthem, Nieuwdorp, Lewedorp, ‘s-Heerenhoek and Borssele are also very concerned about the arrival of the ammonia terminal. They previously said that they would like to go to the Council of State if necessary if the plans in the area disrupt the living environment too much.
Alderman Kees Westrate of the municipality of Borsele wondered out loud last month whether all the plans that are now being made for the Sloe area are compatible. “We are putting together a puzzle, where only the edges are still there. But in my experience there are far too many pieces that still need to be put in the puzzle. I have serious doubts about whether it all fits,” he said.
The province of Zeeland does not want to respond until all views have been assessed and the advice of the committee examining the permit is public.
