Two SGP politicians are going to Rome this week to sign an international declaration against surrogacy. They believe surrogacy is an “inhumane practice” that goes against the interests of “vulnerable children and women”.

MEP Bert-Jan Ruissen and Member of Parliament Diederik van Dijk say on the SGP website that they think surrogacy is “absolutely not okay”. “Little babies are taken from their mothers and women are exploited and reduced to wombs.”

The two will be the “first Dutch politicians” in Rome to sign the so-called Casablanca Declaration, which was drawn up in Morocco last year and has a hundred signatures. They call on colleagues to also speak out.

According to Ruissen and Van Dijk, many people are disgusted by the practice of surrogacy, but they do not dare to say anything about it. “Out of fear of the fierce lobby from the LGBTI corner, among others, we tolerate a lot of silent misery,” they say.

Bill

There is a bill in the House of Representatives from the current cabinet to better regulate surrogacy. This states, among other things, that the judge can decide that the intended parents immediately become the legal parents of the child before the surrogate mother becomes pregnant.

Furthermore, prospective parents may place a call for a surrogate mother in the proposal. That has been prohibited until now. The two ‘parties’ must conclude an agreement in the presence of their lawyers and the surrogate mother can receive maximum reimbursement of expenses.

In 2019, the SGP caused a stir by signing another international statement. That was the Nashville Statement, which had a strong anti-LGBTQ tone.
