DRENTHE – During the weekend of May 25 and 26, thirty-nine museums and other institutions affiliated with the Canon of the Netherlands will organize almost a hundred activities throughout the country focusing on the history of the Netherlands. The Canon Days are organized by the network of the Canon of the Netherlands. In this network, museums and heritage institutions work together to highlight the Canon of the Netherlands. With almost a hundred, there is something to do for everyone, young and old. Various museums in Drenthe are also participating.

Jumping and kicking from Frederiksoord to Veenhuizen

Discover the Colonies of Benevolence and cycle between the two colonies Frederiksoord and Veenhuizen. The 81 kilometer bike ride starts at Museum de Proefcolony in Frederiksoord. A delicious lunch awaits in Veenhuizen and on the way back there is a culinary stop at Hotel-Restaurant Grenzeloos in Doldersum. This cycling tour goes straight through the Drenthe-Frisian border region, where you will encounter many historical monuments. The Foundling of Veenhuizen brought to life on the museum floor

The long-awaited book ‘De Vondeling van Veenhuizen’ by Patricia Snel comes to life on the floor of the Prison Museum. In a journey past readers, theater makers and musicians, you follow the lives of three orphans as they try to survive in the harsh world of Veenhuizen in the early nineteenth century. This activity at the National Prison Museum is on May 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. More information about the book is here.

Help out on the farm!

What was the life of a dolmen builder like? During the Canon Days, contribute your ‘stone’ to the farm in 3000 BC. Dive into the lives of the first farmers in Drenthe and help with their daily activities. This activity in the Hunebed Center in Borger is on May 25 and 26 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. More information can be found here.

In this key pieces tour you will be immersed in the life of the Hunebed builders. Learn about the time of the Dolmen builders, the first farmers in Drenthe, and visit the largest Dolmen in the Netherlands!
