We now know what will happen at the location where the new Feyenoord stadium on the Maas was originally going to be built. Instead, the Waterkant district is being developed.

Project manager Wilco Verhagen explains that there will be a tidal park partly located in the Maas, together with an attractive recreational quay. There is currently little greenery in the neighborhood for residents, but this will change with Feyenoord City. In addition to homes, schools, educational facilities, GP practices and space for local entrepreneurs will be created. There will also be a new station.

Although residents are happy with the extra greenery, some experience the construction of tall buildings as a threat. For example, a resident is concerned about the unobstructed view she now has; if this disappears, she will consider selling her home. The residents would especially like to see a supermarket and facilities for children nearby, because the current situation in which all children have to go to school far away is not ideal.

The many new homes are primarily intended for the residents of South Rotterdam. Approximately 15 to 20 percent social housing will be built on the site where the stadium was originally to be located, while in the rest of the area approximately 25 percent will be social rental and 40 percent medium-priced housing.

Agreements are being made with the Veranda residents’ association to limit noise pollution as much as possible in the future.
