NORTH BRABANT – The province of North Brabant is investing an additional 3 million euros in the accessibility of public transport. This money helps municipalities, for example, to make bus stops more accessible for people with disabilities. It is the next step towards the ambitious goal of having fully accessible public transport by 2040.

Public transport in Brabant is for everyone. This means that all Brabanders, even if they have a disability, must be able to make their journey independently. That is why the province signed the Accessible Public Transport Administrative Agreement two years ago, which should ensure that the entire Netherlands has fully accessible public transport by 2040.

In the first phase of that process, the province will work with experienced experts to improve accessibility at important public transport junctions. They will also involve target groups even better in public transport and improve their communication and information provision about accessibility.

Remove barriers

They also encourage municipalities to make bus stops fully accessible. The province of North Brabant is now making 3 million euros available for this purpose. Municipalities can apply for the budget via the Regional Mobility Program.

“We hope that many municipalities will raise their hands,” says mobility deputy Stijn Smeulders. “Because then we can quickly get to work together to really make a difference. Good accessibility is crucial for the functioning of our society, economy, quality of life and broad prosperity. Everyone should be able to participate. That is why we must do everything we can to remove the barriers for all travelers. In this case, almost literally.”

Extra budget

The amount of 3 million is in addition to the province’s existing budget of more than 1.1 million euros for accessibility in public transport. The government is investing approximately 30 million euros in the project. Based on a distribution key, more than 1 million euros will flow to Brabant.

No activities are included in the program to make equipment accessible in the province. In Brabant, all regular buses and local buses are already accessible to people in wheelchairs.
