Mayor Sharon Dijksma of Utrecht sends a letter to all parents of rioters who were present during unrest in the Overvecht district. In this letter she makes it clear that parents are responsible for their children and that the municipality will recover any damage from them.
It has been restless at a shopping center in the Overvecht district for several evenings. Large groups of young people turned against the police and boas and pelted them with eggs and lighters, among other things. Heavy fireworks were set off, a city bus was pelted, a fire was set and bus shelters were destroyed. “This situation requires firm limits on unacceptable misconduct,” Dijksma warns in a letter to the municipal council.
In conversation
In recent days, officers arrested 4 young people. The mayor wants to talk to the parents of those causing nuisance this week, and the police have drawn up a list of names. Dijksma also announces an area ban on a number of known rioters. Rioters are not allowed to come near the shopping center in the evening and part of the night.
Measures
Following the unrest, various measures have been taken to normalize the situation. For example, there is extra effort from youth workers and volunteers such as neighborhood fathers to address young people about their behavior. The municipality also installed extra speed bumps in the parking lot to prevent speeding. In addition, there will be flexible cameras. The police are extra alert.
