Policymakers who strive for a more active and involved community benefit from inspiring insights. Insights that show how you can transform a neighborhood and the collaboration between local residents and the municipality. Frank Lieuwen, resident of Deventer, climate mayor and member of the sustainability team of his Zandweerd neighborhood, tells as an expert by experience how he made an impact in their local community with the support of Buurkracht.

Frank Lieuwen has lived in the Zandweerd district for more than 25 years, a diverse and vibrant community of 5,500 households, some of which are 150 years old. This diversity brings unique challenges, especially when it comes to sustainability and social cohesion.

Reaching people is challenging because everyone has different needs.

Successful projects and joint actions

With the support of Buurkracht, the team in Zandweerd has launched various successful projects, from green roofs to energy-saving measures. “Our first major project was the construction of sedum roofs,” says Lieuwen. “With webinars, subsidies and collaboration with suppliers, we were able to realize 2,000 m² of green roofs in two years.”

Collaboration with the municipality was essential in this. Frank emphasizes the importance of being seen as a serious discussion partner. “We have learned that continuous dialogue with the municipality is essential. It helps us to coordinate our plans and ensure that we pursue common goals.” This has led to a structural improvement in communication and cooperation between the sustainability team and municipal authorities.

Financial and social aspects

Another great initiative was the establishment of a local food cooperative. “We wanted to shorten the food chain and strengthen the community at the same time,” Lieuwen explains. “We started with ten families and now twelve are participating. It’s more than just buying from the farmer; it’s a sense of community that we create.”

Lieuwen also emphasizes the role of Buurkracht in increasing the accessibility and inclusivity of sustainable initiatives. “We use the Buurkracht app and online platforms to involve as many residents as possible. It is not only about sustainability, but also about financial and social aspects.”

Sustainable community spirit

“Collaborating with neighbors makes me happy. It gives energy and helps us to continuously improve,” says Frank Lieuwen. This has not only led to visible improvements in Zandweerd, but also to a model that other municipalities can follow to strengthen their own community initiatives.
