Southwest Drenthe and the Kop van Overijssel will together receive five million euros from the government to do something about climate change. That money can be used to combat problems such as flooding and extreme drought.

Both regions have joined forces to tackle climate change. They do this under the name Fluvius. The working group consists of the municipalities of Meppel, Westerveld, Midden-Drenthe, Hoogeveen and Steenwijkerland.

Both provinces and the Drentse Overijsselse Delta Water Board are also involved.

The working group says that the money can be used to take measures in 36 places.

In De Wolden there are a number of concrete examples of where the money is invested. For example in Zuidwolde: verges are being lowered there to prevent flooding.

This happens in streets that are slightly higher in the village. When there is a lot of rain, the lower streets are particularly affected. By lowering the verges in the higher streets, the water can be collected there. This should reduce the nuisance.

Another project sponsored with the money is the wadi in the center of Zuidwolde. That is a kind of green pit into which rainwater slowly flows away. It must tackle flooding and it is good for the greenery.

The multifunctional center, the Wolderhuus, was recently opened in Zuidwolde. The garden around the building still needs to be landscaped, and that will soon be done with the money.
