DRAGON – During an evening surveillance in the municipality of Smallingerland, the ‘green boas’ of the FUMO came across a hunter. The man was in possession of a jar containing a suspected pesticide.

After research by the Dutch Forensic Institute (NFI), this turned out to be the banned pesticide ‘Aldicarb’. Very poisonous to humans and animals.

The FUMO has drawn up a report against the hunter, because possession of the drug is a punishable offense. The Functional Public Prosecution Service then determines the penalty. The police will take any measures regarding this hunter’s environmental permit for hunting rifle activities.

Poison to kill predators

Possession of some pesticides is prohibited. Unfortunately, it is sometimes also used deliberately to deliberately kill predators and birds, among other things. This is called bird of prey persecution.

A dead sea eagle was recently found near Weidum in Friesland. After investigation it turned out that this bird had been poisoned. The white-tailed eagle had eaten from a poisoned coot. The ‘green boas’ of the FUMO often see signals of persecution of birds of prey.

Persecution of birds of prey is illegal

The Netherlands has a long history of illegally killing birds of prey. Various ways are used for this; poisoning, shooting, catching with traps, shooting through the nest or cutting down the nest trees. Poisoning often occurs by placing poisoned game, poultry or moles, for example. The birds and animals of prey eat this poisoned bait, resulting in a very painful death.

Research and collaboration

The ‘green boas’, together with partners, investigate perpetrators who are involved in the persecution of protected animal species. Expertise from the Forensic Investigation (FO) of the Police and the Dutch Forensic Institute (NFI) was also called in in this case.
