In the first three months of this year, 12,055 asylum seekers came to the Netherlands. That is about 36 percent more than in the same period last year. Both the number of asylum applications and the number of following travelers have increased.

Statistics agency CBS reports this based on the latest figures from the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND).

In the first quarter of this year, 8,965 people submitted an asylum application in the Netherlands. That is 29 percent more than in the same quarter last year.

A third of those asylum applications were submitted by people from Syria. This concerns 2,900 applications. That is an increase of 86 percent compared to the same period last year.

Many asylum applications also came in from Iraq. This concerns 1,190 applications. That is almost 5.5 times as many as in the first quarter of 2023. After Syria and Iraq, the most asylum requests came from Turkey (495) and Yemen (470).

It was mainly men who submitted an asylum application in January, February and March. Most people were also younger than 35 years old. A quarter were minors.

The number of follow-up travelers is also increasing

In addition to the number of asylum applications, the number of following travelers has also increased. 3,090 people were allowed to come to the Netherlands in the first three months of this year to join a family member who has been granted asylum.

That is an increase of 62 percent compared to the first quarter of last year. At that time it concerned 1,905 subsequent travelers.

Most follow-up travelers come from Syria: 2,310. Furthermore, relatives traveling from Yemen, Turkey and Iraq came. Most follow-up travelers are women. Just over half of them were under the age of eighteen.
