MIDDELBURG/ARNEMUIDEN – Remembrance Day will take place in Middelburg and Arnemuiden on Saturday, May 4. In Middelburg on the Abdijplein and in Arnemuiden on the general cemetery on Radermacherstraat.

City carillonneur Janno den Engelsman will play the carillon from 6:30 PM. The commemoration in Middelburg starts at 7 p.m. with a Vespers service in the Koorkerk by the Council of Churches, led by Rev. Chris Kors. The ceremony on Abbey Square starts around 7:40 PM. There the city poet and two of Nehalennia’s students recite a poem. Mayor Fränzel will then give a speech. At 8 p.m. there will be two minutes of silence, followed by the laying of wreaths and a Lament in memory of the dead. The ceremony ends with a parade. Christian Brass Band Middelburg and Inter Scaldis Pipes and Drums provide the musical accompaniment.

Free performances at Theater Na de Dam

Theater Na de Dam again presents more than 100 performances about the Second World War throughout the Netherlands. In Zeeland, the Zeeland Youth Theater School is participating for the ninth time. This year there are two free location performances in the city center of Middelburg. A youth performance “Wait for me” in and around the Etty Hillesum House (Molenwater 77). A performance by two theater makers: Marcos Valster Da Costa Ferreira & Mahfoud Mokaddem “GHARIB” in the Zeeuws Archief (Hofplein 16). The audience will gather in front of the Zeeuws Archief at 9 p.m., will be split into two groups and will see both performances. The audience is guided by the young people. Arnemuiden

In Arnemuiden the procession leaves from ‘t Stadthuys (meeting at 7.30 pm) with a drummer at 7.45 pm to the Old General Cemetery on Radermacherstraat. At 8 p.m. there will be two minutes of silence, followed by the Wilhelmus and a speech by Alderman Treurniet. Then a student from an Arnemuid school recites a poem and wreaths are laid. The commemoration ends with a parade. The Arnemuiden Music Association provides the music during the ceremony.
