Matthijs de Ligt wants to play for Ajax again one day. “I often think about a return and hope that it will happen,” says the 24-year-old Bayern Munich defender on the website of the club from Amsterdam.
“I played in the first team for three years, so relatively short. I had always thought that I would play at Ajax a little longer, but the situation turned out to be slightly different. If I ever get the chance to return to Ajax, I would really like to. But of course you never know.”
De Ligt left Ajax five years ago after a season in which the club reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, won the national title and the KNVB Cup. He went to play for Juventus. De Ligt has been playing football for the German club since 2022. “I am very happy with the steps I have taken. I won the title in Italy and Germany. For a 24-year-old, things are going quite well, I think,” said the Dutch international.

De Ligt still cherishes warm memories of Ajax. “I played at Ajax for about ten years in total. Of course, I miss all the people I met there and all the players I played with,” said the former captain, who still follows the club. “It is not the best phase in the club’s history and that is difficult to see.”
This season Ajax is experiencing the biggest administrative and sporting crisis in its existence. The club has even been at the bottom of the Premier League. With three rounds to go, the Amsterdam team is fifth.
