Meppel, the most artistic municipality in Drenthe – De Kop

No municipality in Drenthe has produced as many artists as Meppel. Of every 10,000 people born in this municipality, 24 become artists. In Westerveld there are 7.7 and in Steenwijkerland 15. This is evident from research by home study platform Laudius, which examined the artist database of the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD). In total, data from almost 38,000 Dutch artists, born from 1500 to 2000, were analyzed.

After Meppel, many artists come from De Wolden and Assen in particular. For every 10,000 born inhabitants of De Wolden, 14 creative people were born and among Assen residents there were 12. Relatively speaking, the fewest artists come from Noordenveld (3.8) and Aa en Hunze (5.1). Westerveld does not score high either with 7.7.

Drenthe has the most painters

Drenthe produces a striking number of painters: 32.1% of all artists here choose this art discipline. This percentage is higher than in all other Dutch provinces: on average 29.5% of all artists are painters. In addition to painting, drawing and illustration (16.9%) and sculpting (12.1%) are particularly popular in Drenthe.

Women are taking over in the arts

Although the art world has been dominated by men for centuries, the role of women is increasingly present. The influence of women in art increased, especially in the 20th century. Since the 1990s, more women (59%) than men have been active in the profession.
