Purely electric cars still cause so-called ‘range anxiety’ for many drivers. Fortunately, plug-in hybrids have an increasingly greater range. The road tax discount will be phased out in the coming years.

In theory, plug-in hybrids offer the best of both worlds: by combining a combustion engine with an electric motor and a battery, you can drive purely electrically during shorter journeys. That’s a good thing, because cars with a combustion engine, especially in the city, consume much more fuel, so fuel savings are maximized. If the batteries are empty, the combustion engine takes over.

No cheap cars

But which plug-in hybrids have the longest electric range? The British WhatCar has compared the official WLTP figures for pure electric driving of each model. The top ones all have a range of more than 100 kilometers. However, they are not cheap. The winners – the Range Rover Sport P460e and Mercedes GLC 300e – have an almost identical and impressive electric range, but also an impressive price tag.

Road tax still favorable

Plug-in hybrids have a favorable road tax rate. Owners of a plug-in hybrid with emissions of less than 50 grams of CO2 per kilometer receive a 50 percent discount. This applies until 2024. From January 2025, the discount will be reduced to 25 percent. This discount will expire in 2026 and – just like with electric cars – the full rate will have to be paid. This means that – if the legislation does not change – plug-in hybrids will become more expensive than cars with a combustion engine because their batteries make them heavier.
