Mike Suurmond and Irma Heeren have become the winners of the Zwaagse Weelloop. They were in a class of their own at the 15 kilometer race in Kwadendamme. Suurmond won in 53.23 minutes, Heeren achieved a time of 1.08.29 hours.
Immediately after the start for the men, Erwin Harmes flew back in with the wind at his back, with Suurmond and Emiel Lous close behind. Harmes’ second place in the Oranjeloop in Krabbendijke was apparently still in his legs. “I heard Harmes panting heavily after two kilometers,” Suurmond said.
After that, it was all over for Suurmond and he left Harmes on the spot. Lous could not follow Suurmond and Harmes and was stuck in third place. At the finish, Suurmond recorded a time of 53.23. Despite the wind, that was three minutes faster than last year, when Kevin Bogaert was victorious. Harmes finished in 55.50 and Lous came third in a time of 56.20.
No doubt
Irma Heeren left no doubt that she was the fastest among the women in 1:08:29, just ahead of Lion Baas. Saskia Goole (Kapelle), who ran the Zeeland Flanders marathon last week, came second (1.12, 05) with Ellen van Vlaanderen (Goes) on puncture three (1.13.13).
In the race over 6.4 kilometers there was no limit for Kevin Drijdijk from Middelburg: 23.48. Among the women, the win went to Ivana Groenen from Didam (28.03).
