The Sidekicks make their sound heard

The East Groningen band The Sidekicks, consisting of five members, brings a unique mix of musical styles. This is influenced by a range of musical genres and iconic figures. The ‘Sidekicksound’, as they call it, is a synthesis of musical elements that the band members have collected over the years.

The diversity of their style is clearly reflected in albums such as Blues And More Than Blues (2012) and Texas of the North (2017), which shows how the band goes beyond just blues. This year they announce the release of their third album Homemade On. The launch will take place in April at Grand Café Zuidlaren. The album is available on vinyl and was recorded in Meulnhörn, their home base.

The changeability of the countryside

The outdoor exhibition Icons of the countryside, historic farms on the way to the future travels through the Netherlands and has settled in Winsum, Groningen. Until June 30, you can discover the past of this special area and the opportunities that agricultural heritage offers for the future on the Maarhuizen mound. The exhibition shows how the countryside has changed and how agricultural heritage offers opportunities, also for generations to come.

The historical value of farms and their role in the landscape is highlighted. In addition, the opportunities that repurposing farms offers for a future-proof countryside are examined. No nostalgia, but the focus is on the future with an eye for history.

May holiday in the University Museum

The University Museum not only features bright scientists and their inventions; Of course you can also get started yourself. During the May holidays, the museum once again properly set up the crafts and experiments corner, this time also including an archeology corner. In the young inventors craft corner you can make a paper stained glass animal, fold origami or carry out real experiments. For example, create an optical illusion, just like psychologist Gerard Heymans, or imitate Johann Bernoulli with an air pressure experiment. There will also be an exciting plasma ball during the holidays where you can see beautiful flashes of lightning appear when you touch them with your fingers. Or put on your lab coat and come and make bath salts in the experiment corner, with beautiful colors and a nice scent. You can also assemble the human body yourself here and learn exactly what function our organs have.

Finally, there is a microscope where you can view special preparations under supervision, including dragonflies, plants, wood and various creatures. Under the microscope the smallest details become visible, allowing you to learn all kinds of things about nature. There are also various skulls. Can you tell the difference between a dog and a cat? Finally, in the temporary exhibition Kaleidoscope you will see all kinds of cool objects from the museum’s collection. Part comes from the former Nature Museum in Groningen. And the nice thing about the exhibition is that you can vote for your favorite objects.

Groningen – University Museum, daily until Thursday 10 am – 4 pm, 7.50 euros

The Armed Man: a play against violence | Advertisement

Conductor Wim van de Laar works with a 90-member project choir and the 55-member student orchestra Bragi on this piece of music by Karl Jenkins. The Armed Man is a piece against violence, for peace. That is why the date for the concert was chosen as May 4, the day that is all about commemoration in our country. Composer Jenkins wrote the piece in 1999 and dedicated it to the victims of the Kosovo crisis.

Jenkins uses elements from the Catholic mass and supplements them with texts from other religions, for example. This creates a special interaction. In the piece of music the emotions alternate: action, the call for help from above, tranquility, joy, fear, sadness and the welcome of peace. Tickets are available in advance at Londeman Mannenmode in Sappemeer or by email via [email protected]. Please mention your name and number of places in the afternoon and/or evening in the email.

Concert Chamber Orchestra of the North | Advertisement

The Chamber Orchestra of the North will play a memorial concert with music from Ukraine on Thursday. The music ensemble has carefully selected pieces from three generations of Ukrainian composers currently dealing with the current war. Conductor Maxime Shalygin has previously collaborated with the Chamber Orchestra of the North.

In addition to the orchestra, singer Maryana Golovchenko lends her voice to the occasion and Nico de Rooij takes care of the lighting design. Music pieces such as Drop after drop, Lullaby and Satarsa from Maxim Shalygin, Silent Music by Valentin Silvestrov and Tristium by Svyatoslav Lunyov will be performed during the concert. The concert will be given again on May 4 in De Oosterpoort in Groningen. More information can be found at theaterroden.nl/kamerorkest.

De Ploeg in Museum Klooster Ter Apel | Advertisement

The Groningen art circle De Ploeg will be displaying striking works in the Museum Klooster Ter Apel until September 15. De Ploeg and the museum have long been linked by their shared history and the quiet environment. Past and present come together through the diversity of artworks by both former members, such as Henk Helmantel, and current members, including Geert Schreuder. Johan Dijkstra, one of the founders of De Ploeg, is the founder of the stained glass windows on site.

In the exhibition With De Ploeg in the silence the group of contemporary artists highlights the complexity and dynamics of silence. Reflecting on the meaning of silence within the creative process is central. The works of art differ in form, but all deal with silence. As an additional enrichment, two guest exhibitors have been invited. Painter Maarten Dalstra and photographer Renée Luth show their vision on the theme of ‘silence’, where Luth will recite a poem during the opening.
