Waving can mean both a warm welcome and an emotional farewell. It is a non-verbal way of greeting that everyone knows, even the queen.

That is why on June 21, 1950, more than five hundred children gave a real ‘clapper ovation’ to Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard on the Grote Markt, with flags, musical instruments and lots of waving. However, it does not last long. The royal couple will run out of time during the two-day visit to Groningen. They not only have to see the city, but almost the entire province!

The driving tour takes you past a launch at Foxhol. In Winschoten the Oranjes are presented with a black pedigree mare and in Heiligerlee a wreath is laid at the statue of distant relative Adolf van Nassau. The program is so packed that every welcome is at the same time a farewell.

We at Het Beeld van Groningen now also wave and say hello. This is the last episode of this series, after six years and almost 250 photos. We could not have offered a more royal farewell than a clapping ovation and a last glimpse of the province. Bye!

The Groninger Archives selected a photo from the press photo collection every week and wrote about the story behind it. Do you have any questions or remarks? Email to [email protected].
