REGION > The completion of the IJsselstein part of the Utrecht – IJsselstein cycle route has been celebrated. The cycle path along the Baronieweg/Parallelweg has been widened and improved over the past six months on behalf of the province of Utrecht. In total it is about 3 kilometers between the Basiliekpad and the Zavelweg.

The opening took place near the Terberg site on the Industrieweg. BMX rider and former world champion Sietse van Berkel provided an opening act. Children from the area were invited to cycle on the BMX track under the guidance of Sietse. After speeches by councilor Peter Bekker (municipality of IJsselstein), project manager of cycle routes Eelco van Ruiten (province of Utrecht) and René Stekelenburg (contractor Jos Scholman), attendees were able to cycle a bit on the renovated cycle path of the cycle route. This officially opened the IJsselstein part of the Utrecht – IJsselstein cycle route.

About the Utrecht – IJsselstein cycle route

The cycle route between Utrecht and IJsselstein is one of the nine cycle routes being constructed in the province of Utrecht and runs from IJsselstein via Nieuwegein (hospital and Cityplaza shopping center) to Utrecht Vaartsche Rijn station and connects to the Singelring. The total route is 12 kilometers.
For the rest of the year and also in 2025, work will take place on parts of the cycle route in Nieuwegein and Utrecht. The plan is to open the cycle route in its entirety in 2025.

Why cycle routes

To cycle smoothly, safely and pleasantly between villages and cities, the province is working on nine cycle routes. Together with municipalities, we improve existing cycle paths and streets where the road is shared by cyclists and motorists. We provide a more comfortable and, where possible, wider road surface and apply recognizable lines and signposts. This makes it even more attractive to cycle for longer distances. That is good for our climate, reduces traffic jams on the road and is healthy. All cyclists are welcome on the cycle routes, whether you cycle quickly or leisurely. You will encounter fewer obstacles here and will often have priority over other traffic. More information about the cycle routes can be found at www.provincie-utrecht.nl/doorfietsroutes
