In 2025, the province of Groningen will celebrate and commemorate 80 years of freedom with a large program full of exhibitions, theater, lectures, workshops, educational projects and much more. This not only concerns the Second World War, but also recent war situations and the meaning of ‘freedom’.

Freedom is so important right now. Because of all the wars in the world, we realize all too well that freedom is not ordinary. The projects under the banner of 80 years of freedom in Groningen invite everyone to think about freedom – in the broadest sense of the word – and to discuss it. What exactly is freedom? And what can we do ourselves to guarantee it?

Cooperation

80 years of freedom Groningen is a partnership of museums, educational institutions, cultural parties and heritage institutions in the province of Groningen. Together they organize a province-wide program of activities, where everyone should feel welcome. Art, culture and heritage bring people together to work together – on a small scale – towards freedom.

The kick-off meeting will be held on February 14, 2025 in the Nicolaïkerk in Appingedam. Activities and events take place throughout the anniversary year. The program is currently still in development. Every organization in the province of Groningen, small or large, is very welcome to participate. About 40 parties are now affiliated with 80 years of freedom in Groningen, from all Groningen municipalities. The coordination is in the hands of Museum aan de A.

More information can be found at www.80jaarvrijheidgroningen.nl. The activities calendar will also be published on this website in 2025
