with mapThe World Wildlife Fund is sounding the alarm. Protected and popular river nature along the Waal and IJssel is drying out and is therefore in serious danger. Secondary channels are in danger of losing their crucial role as nurseries for various animal species due to a reduced supply of water.

Floodplains dry out. Secondary channels dry up too often. The temperature of the river water is rising and is often too high for native fish species in summer. In the little water that remains in the river at low flows, so many ships sail that fish can hardly escape ship’s propellers.

These are the striking results of a study that Bureau Stroming carried out on behalf of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The research focused on the Maas, Rhine and IJssel.
