Flash delivery company Getir is stopping in the Netherlands. The originally Turkish company, which grew like crazy during the corona years, is also taking over in the UK, Germany and the United States.
Getir has just announced this in a short announcement.
Focus on Turkey
The decision had been up in the air for some time. British and American media previously reported that the company would want to close down operations outside Turkey.
“With this decision, Getir chooses to focus its attention on its home market in Turkey, where it is best positioned to further grow its delivery service,” the company wrote in a press release.
Employees will be informed of the decision today. It is not yet entirely certain when the plug will be pulled out. “Customers can continue to place orders in the coming weeks. We will announce via the app when orders are no longer possible,” said a spokesperson.
12 billion
Getir’s flash delivery service, which allowed customers to have their groceries delivered to their home within a few minutes, seemed like a golden opportunity, especially during the corona period.
The Turkish company quickly expanded in Europe and took over competitors, such as Gorillas, also active in the Netherlands. Investors lined up and the company was valued at $12 billion.
50 million
But after the pandemic things quickly came to a standstill. Like many other flash delivery companies, Getir faced declining customer demand and money spouted out. According to Bloomberg, around 50 million euros are burned every month.
The dissatisfied investors want Getir to get costs under control and focus on its home market, Turkey.
Further details about Getir’s departure from the Netherlands have not been announced.
