The Dutch government will subsidize seven projects that will produce hydrogen based on electrolysis. These seven projects have a combined electrolysis capacity of 101MW, of which 91MW is in the province of Groningen. The subsidy pot amounts to a total of 245.6 million euros.

The hydrogen produced is supplied to, for example, the chemical industry or filling stations. The outgoing cabinet mainly opted for various, smaller hydrogen projects, ‘so that lessons learned with, among other things, the technology and permit procedures ensure acceleration in the development of subsequent projects’.

In total, more than 600 million euros in subsidies have been requested. The subsidy has been granted to H2 hollandia, Hysolar, Greengas asset with two projects, RWE Eemshydrogen, Van Kessel Olie and VoltH2. One of the projects receives electricity via a direct line to a solar installation, which according to the government contributes to reducing pressure on the power grid.

The subsidy was made available last October and aims to compensate for the ‘unprofitable top’, or the cost difference between renewable and fossil hydrogen. Only projects with a capacity of 0.5 to 50MW were eligible for the subsidy. The government aimed to achieve a total capacity of 100MW, which was achieved with a 1MW margin. An average of 2.5 million euros per megawatt of electrolysis capacity has been granted a subsidy. The companies have until 2028 to complete the electrolysis projects.
