Children from public Dalton school De Eskampen in Peize raised almost 12,000 euros for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) this week. How does the school obtain such a large amount? Teacher Marcia Brinksma explains.

Well, 12,000 euros, that’s not nothing.

“We were shocked by it ourselves. And then we made a conservative estimate of the yield. We will probably exceed 12,000 euros and we may well reach 13,000 euros.”

And everything for a good cause?

“Once every two years we have a charity week at school. The previous times the proceeds were between 2000 and 3000 euros. Everything revolved around the WWF. The children chose that goal themselves.”

Why is it that the yield is now much higher? ?

“Especially because of the sponsored run we held on the sports field. It raised thousands of euros. The children still have to collect the money from their sponsors.”

What else have the children done to raise money?

“We held a bottle campaign in the village for deposits on bottles and cans. WWF key rings were also sold. Everyone wanted a panda key. And we held a market where books and games were sold and where we had all kinds of activities.”

Has the school still paid attention to the WWF?

“Yes, an endangered species was discussed in every class. I teach in two groups, in 5a the sea turtle is discussed and in 5b the leopard.”

Was the check presented at school on Friday?

“Yes, the WWF volunteer was speechless when he saw the proceeds. At most schools he had attended, the amounts involved were between 200 and 300 euros. This was a bit different.”
