VEERE/MIDDELBURG – During the Pentecost weekend on May 18 and 19, 2024, the Sinfonietta String Festival will return for the fifth time in Veere and Middelburg. In collaboration with the Grote Kerk Veere, Amsterdam Sinfonietta presents a weekend full of string music in small and large ensembles, at various locations. Including Philip Glass in India in the Grote Kerk Veere, the Music Route and chamber music in the Zeeland Concert Hall. During the final concert, Sinfonietta will present a new version of the Lucie in the Sky with Diamonds program together with recorder player Lucie Horsch.

The festival opens on Saturday afternoon with the Music Route. The Music Route leads you through idyllic Veere to intimate locations. There, musicians from Amsterdam Sinfonietta play chamber music in small ensembles. Due to the historic locations and the limited number of visitors per concert, the atmosphere is intimate and informal.

Saturday

On Saturday evening, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, led by violinist Daniel Bard, presents the Philip Glass program in India. The orchestra has invited the American violinist William Hagen for the solo part of Glass’ Second Violin Concerto ‘The American Four Seasons’. Like Glass, composer Jonny Greenwood was also inspired by Indian music for his piece Water. This work is framed by Indian ragas sung by the Dutch-Indian Madhu Lalbahadoersing.

Sunday

On Sunday morning there will be chamber music in the Zeeland Concert Hall in Middelburg. The program includes Ravel’s Sonata for violin and cello, a tribute to his late colleague Debussy, and Mozart’s masterful string quintet in C, KV 515. During the final concert on Sunday afternoon in the Grote Kerk Veere, the Amsterdam Sinfonietta and recorder player Lucie Horsch take you on a journey. hallucinatory journey through time through Italy, Hungary and England. Together they push the boundaries. In honor of the special relationship between the historic trading town of Veere and Scotland, the musicians are making an extra trip to Scotland this time.
