Labor Day was celebrated exuberantly in the city on Saturday, May 1, 1954. The Labor Party – how could it be otherwise – organized the event.

According to it Newspaper of the North it was one of the largest May 1 celebrations in Groningen and it was certainly a festive day!

The party opened with the usual reveille by the Red Guards, Migratory Birds and Swallows: the youth groups of the Arbeiders Jeugd Centrale. Preceded by the workers’ music association Ons Ideal, a procession of about eight to nine hundred children then passed through the city to the City Park.

Children’s parties

The children’s parties were held on the racecourse. There was a living goose board and singing, games and a film screening for the little ones. And to top it all off, the children also received a treat.

The adults were not forgotten either. They were welcome at a meeting in the pavilion. Of course, some more serious matters were discussed here.

Warning against complacency

Member of Parliament JJA Berger warned his audience against complacency, even after the favorable election results. Because “the democratic socialist does not believe that the world will go by itself,” according to Berger. The audience will have taken his words to heart and then returned to the festivities.
