May 4 commemorations Westerkwartier
On May 4, the Netherlands commemorates the war victims of the Second World War, in war situations and during Dutch Peace Missions. This also applies to the municipality of Westerkwartier. The Westerkwartier also specifically commemorates fallen local residents, airmen and resistance fighters. The collaborating May 4 Committees in the Westerkwartier invite you and yourselves to commemorate this. Primary school students participate in many commemorations. The overview below shows locations and times where commemorations take place in the municipality of Westerkwartier. » view the locations

Handing in Small Chemical Waste in your area
In May you can hand in your Small Chemical Waste (KCA) at various locations in the municipality. Handing in KCA is free. NB! During this return moment you can hand in the contents of an environmental box in terms of quantity. This is to prevent people from handing in large quantities of KCA, causing the chemo cart to become full and other people to no longer be able to hand in anything.
Tuesday May 14th

Do you have questions or comments about KCA? Please submit this to the municipality via 14 0594 or [email protected]. The employee on the chemo cart is not an employee of the municipality and therefore cannot always answer your questions. You can also hand in your KCA during opening hours at the De Tweemat recycling center in Grootegast during the year. Handing in KCA is free.

You will soon receive Messages about your Neighborhood in your inbox
Many decisions that the government makes have a direct influence on your city, village or neighborhood. What renovation do your neighbors want to have done to their house? Can that tree in your street be cut down? Your municipality and other government organizations are obliged to announce this (digitally). We call these announcements ‘Messages about your Neighborhood’. You will soon receive this by email every week. With this email, the government wants to provide you with better information about issues that are happening in your own neighborhood. This also makes it clear how you can have a say or submit an objection.
Every resident of the Netherlands aged 25 and older whose email address is known to MijnOverheid will first receive a welcome email. This contains all the information you need. Via MijnOverheid you can set how often you want to receive the e-mail and how large the area is that the announcements cover. Don’t want to receive emails? You can then unsubscribe immediately and easily.
You will receive the email from Overheid.nl. This email contains links to website addresses so that you can easily and quickly access the information. Unfortunately, criminals are also active on the internet. They try to lure you to fake websites via links in fake emails (phishing). Therefore, always check the sender first ([email protected]) before clicking on a link.

Freedom meal for the first time at the Northbase Veterans Home
Under the title ‘Freedom You Celebrate Together’ we are celebrating Liberation Day for the first time this year in the Northbase Veterans Home in Winschoten with a Freedom Meal. Freedom meal is a national initiative of the National Committee 4 and 5 May that has been in existence since 2012. The aim is to connect people throughout the Netherlands with the help of these meals within the theme of freedom. Northbase opened its doors in mid-September last year, making it the only Veterans Home
in the two provinces of Groningen and Friesland, which is recognized by the national umbrella organization for Veterans Meeting Centers (VOC).
It goes without saying that freedom is celebrated in the Veterans Home. Veterans know better than anyone that freedom cannot be taken for granted. After all, they had to fight for this in the past, so that others can live in freedom. The Freedom Meal in the form of a brunch will take place on May 5, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the Northbase veterans home at Blijhamsterstraat 11A, 9671 AS in Winschoten (GR), with a walk-in and walk-out of 30 minutes.
We cordially invite all veterans, other (former) uniformed personnel and all interested parties to celebrate freedom together, while enjoying an extensive sandwich meal with Freedom Soup(**) and a good conversation. Participation is completely free for
everyone.

There are a total of 38 recognized Veterans’ Homes throughout the Netherlands
(**) The Freedom Soup is vegan and fits a gluten- and lactose-free diet
