“That voice that tells you what the next stop is, that you should not forget to check in. Ever since I was little, I have found it magical to listen to,” Marieke says in the radio program Zeeland wakes up. That is why Marieke often imitates the voice.

“I stand on stages, present events and give lectures,” says Marieke. “Whenever I do a sound check, to see if the sound suits my voice, I say something like ‘dear travelers’, or something else public transport-like.” She is then often asked by the sound engineers whether she actually ever records something for public transport.

Marieke is coincidentally invited by transport company TransDev to present an event. “Then I thought: am I also going to sound check for these people with ‘dear travelers’?” says Marieke. “Well, I did it anyway, because somewhere I also thought: you only get an opportunity like this once.” Marieke was therefore approached and asked if she wanted an extra job. “That’s incredible!”

You will continue to hear the old voice that is retiring for a while. There are about 5,000 stops throughout the country, so “every once in a while I receive a bulk of stops and sentences. I then record them and they are gradually distributed throughout the Netherlands.” Marieke can’t wait. “Very nice to show everyone in Zeeland the way and tell them the stops.”
