ELBURG – A small Jewish community lived in Elburg around 1700. This community grew over the course of the nineteenth century. Permission was given to build a shul, a synagogue, which was completed in 1855. This building now serves as a museum. René Arendsen visits Museum Sjoel Elburg for the new episode of the Story of Gelderland Podcast.

The Story of Gelderland Podcast is back with a brand new season. In this podcast you travel with presenter René Arendsen through the past of the province. In each episode he visits a museum, speaks with an expert and discusses a theme and period in Gelderland history. In this new episode, René visits Museum Sjoel Elburg.

The Jewish community in Elburg

In an old synagogue along the Graaf Hendriksteeg we find Museum Sjoel Elburg. This museum tells about the Jewish history of the fortified city. At a certain point in the nineteenth century, five percent of Elburg’s residents were members of the Jewish community. In the latest episode of the Story of Gelderland Podcast, René Arendsen speaks with Jan Zwager, the chairman of Museum Sjoel Elburg, about this history. We visit the old synagogue and the Jewish cemetery on the fortress wall with him. In this episode, historian Jonn van Zuthem takes us through important developments of other religious movements in the nineteenth century in Gelderland.
