Vion is busy reorganizing things in Germany, but the meat company is also reportedly working on similar plans in its own country. Due to the declining pig supply, according to reports, consideration is being given to reorganizing the location in Boxtel or Apeldoorn, or possibly even closing it. The meat company says it does not recognize itself in the messages.

Messages are circulating on WhatsApp that appear to come from within the organization that Vion is also going to reorganize, or rather reorganize, in the Netherlands. Vion management would make decisions on this within the next three months. It appears that a restructuring plan is being worked on in the background. It is possible that the curtain will fall on the location in Boxtel or Apeldoorn, it can be read.

Viewed from a distance, these seem to be unlikely measures. After all, Boxtel is the main location where 18,000 to 20,000 pigs are slaughtered every day. The location in Apeldoorn is also still in excellent condition and is also the cradle of organic slaughter. The location in Groenlo is not mentioned. But given that there is currently a lot of renovation going on there, that makes sense. Vion’s spokesperson could not be reached for comment this morning. The company later issued a response stating that Vion has a stable market share in the Netherlands and currently has no plans to change its footprint in our country.

The WhatsApp message in question states that Vion is currently short of pigs for slaughter to maintain the capacity utilization rate. Looking at the current slaughter figures of more than 300,000 pigs per week in our country, this does not appear. The image is also not recognized by Vion suppliers. They do indicate that Vion is working on developing future scenarios, which specifically take animal numbers into account.

Germany
However, there is indeed something to the rumors. At the beginning of this year, Vion also launched a major reorganization plan for the German market, under which no fewer than four of Vion’s fifteen locations in Germany will be sold or closed. It is striking that reports about this also came out at the time, but Vion then relegated them to the realm of fables. This later turned out to be true.

Be that as it may, there is in any case considerable pressure on management led by CEO Ronald Lotgerink to turn the tide. The meat company reported heavy losses in both 2021 and 2022. The figures for 2023 have not yet been announced. Just like last year, Vion publishes later than in previous years, when the figures were often announced in March. When publishing the annual figures for 2022 last summer, Lotgerink announced that the upward trend had started again.
