The Tong Tong Fair in The Hague is canceled this year. The event that focuses on Indian culture cannot take place for “financial reasons”, the organization reports. The festival was scheduled to start on May 24.

In a statement on the website, the organization writes that it has worked “very hard” in recent months to ensure that the Tong Tong Fair can go ahead. “We understand that this decision will come as a shock to many. We did everything we could to prevent this until the very end,” the organization said.

During the festival, the Malieveld is full of food and market stalls for a week and a half and there are music and dance performances. Last year 55,000 people attended.

64th time

This year the 64th edition would take place. The festival would be held on the Malieveld for the very last time. The manager of the field, Staatsbosbeheer, wanted to move the festival due to pop concerts and other activities on the Malieveld. Tong Tong Fair then threatened to leave the city. Ultimately, the parties reached an agreement.

The organization hopes to be able to organize the Tong Tong Fair again in an adapted form in the future.
