Cubs of the Scouting Schonauwen commemorated at the National Children’s Remembrance Day in Madurodam – Houtens News

Houten • Last May 4, 7 cubs and 2 leaders from Scouting Schonauwen participated in the National Children’s Commemoration of Madurodam in The Hague. Scouting feels involved in society and contributes to society, including by helping with social activities. During the day there was a substantive program about commemoration.

The cubs traveled by train to Madurodam. There they viewed Madurodam, had an educational program and attended the commemoration. During the educational program, Syrian Rand (17) told her flight story and the cubs were playfully asked questions about commemoration.

In the evening the cubs attended the National Children’s Remembrance Day. During the commemoration, stories of children with a war past were shared and there was room for singing and dancing. Naturally, the 2 minutes of silence followed at 8 p.m. The National Children’s Remembrance Day ended with a silent procession through Madurodam, past the miniature version of Dam Square in Amsterdam, where our cubs laid their self-made memorial stones. It was cold and wet, so at the end our group drank hot chocolate inside to warm up.

In addition to the National Children’s Remembrance, Scouting Schonauwen has been supporting the commemoration in Houten at the old village for years. The scouts also collected the liberation fire from Wageningen during the night of 4 to 5 May. This fire was brought to Houten on foot. Part of the group did this in relay form, the other part ran the entire 44 km. Together with Mayor Gilbert Isabella, the liberation fire of Houten was lit at 12 noon on May 5.
