Protecting animal and plant species

Vulnerable animal and plant species have legal protection under the Environmental Act. This law prohibits, among other things, the destruction, killing and injuring of protected animal and plant species and the removal of their habitats. This can hinder the sustainability of homes and buildings. This plan states which protected animal species and their numbers occur in the residential areas, which places they live and where their nests are located. It also describes the working method and the measures needed to protect the animals.

Biodiversity increases the quality of life in cities and villages

Bats, swifts and house sparrows live in and around buildings. Often without us knowing it, they can easily be our roommates. It appears that one or more of these species often occur in a large proportion of our homes. For example, swifts often reside under roof tiles and bats often reside in a cavity wall. You must therefore take this into account when renovating or making it more sustainable. If we do not do this, the breeding opportunities and habitats of these animals will disappear forever. The result could be a loss of biodiversity in our cities and towns. For example, plagues can arise from mosquitoes that would otherwise serve as food for birds and bats.

Species management plan for the entire municipality

Drawing up a species management plan takes approximately 1 to 2 years and concerns all residential areas in a municipality. The municipality submits the plan to us. Based on the species management plan, we can then grant an environmental permit to the municipality for a long period (for example 10 years). This environmental permit applies to all residents who are going to make their home more sustainable, only if they report this to their municipality. With the subsidy for species management plans, we help municipalities to accelerate the sustainability of homes.
