Today the original dials are being placed back on the Dom Tower. It involves four dials, each with a diameter of about four meters.
The dials were removed in 2019 and have been completely restored in recent years. They have been repainted and the 48 numbers in total have all been re-gilded with gold leaf.
The work started this morning at 5:00 am. First of all, the dials on the side of Servetstraat and Winkel van Utrecht/VVV were replaced.
The replaced original dials will temporarily disappear behind the scaffolding, but once the dials are up, the scaffolding will quickly be lowered (further) so that everyone can admire the restored dials in all their glory again.
That is not yet possible with a working timepiece. After the dials are replaced, the axes and hands must first be installed and everything must be connected properly. All clocks are expected to work again from the end of May.
Party
After five years of being hidden behind scaffolding cloth, the Cathedral will emerge from the scaffolding this year. The restoration is scheduled to be completed at the end of the summer. This is celebrated festively all year round. Under the title ‘De Dom goes all out!’ Utrecht Marketing organizes a series of activities in which all Utrecht residents can participate.
A complete overview of the activities can be found on domtoren.nl. In addition, the municipality of Utrecht is organizing a delivery moment on November 9 – on St. Martin’s Day, the festival of lights – during which the new lighting of the Dom Tower with color and special effects will be unveiled.
