Donald Trump says he brought Lando Norris luck. The American presidential candidate was a guest in the McLaren garage on Sunday for the Miami Grand Prix. Norris won the race and achieved his first victory in Formula 1 after 110 grands prix.
“He said he brought me luck. I’m curious whether he will come to more races now,” the 24-year-old Briton told reporters afterwards.
Remarkably, Norris defeated three-time world champion Max Verstappen in Miami. “I didn’t see Trump before the race, because I was mainly busy with my preparations. But afterwards he came to congratulate me. I am your good luck charm, he said. I thought it was an honor to meet him. He is someone you have to respect in many ways,” Norris said. “So I thought it was cool, yes.”
McLaren released a statement after Trump’s visit in which it emphasized that the racing stable is not a political organization. “We do respect the office of President of the United States, so for that reason we accepted the request to visit our garage on race day. It gave us the opportunity to showcase the high-quality technology in motorsport.”
