“The impression is now being given that a tree line is being cut down. That is not the case,” the municipality said. “It concerns the outside of the canal directly along the road, up to a maximum of 1.75 meters from the road. There were also some larger trunks there, but directly against the road.”

After the start of the work, Weijers immediately delivered a letter of objections to the town hall and had a conversation with one of the employees. “That actually came to nothing.” According to her, there is no other option than to go to court.

Powerless

“We felt so powerless that we decided to turn off the tap,” she says. “We invoked our right to demonstrate and immediately informed the police.” The police then contacted the public prosecutor and the municipality. It has now been decided to temporarily stop the work. The municipality is now waiting for the preliminary relief judge to make a ruling.

“We also submitted a request to the preliminary relief judge. He immediately called me back the next day.” The neighborhood has until Wednesday to submit the permits for the felling work. Without permits there is no lawsuit.

Pieces above water

Weijers has submitted a request to the municipality’s legal affairs department to bring all the documents to light. According to her, the municipal website states that you are not allowed to prune or cut down trees from March due to the breeding season. “I would like to have the entire file from the first plans to now. But I have not received it yet. We want to demonstrate that this is not necessary and that it was planned incorrectly.”

If there are no documents, local residents must hire a lawyer and go to civil court. “Then this work will of course be over a long time ago. But we will remain combative.”
