You don’t have to go far for a free outing. The weekend of May 11 and 12 is the National Mill Days and you can visit the Oranjemolen in Vlissingen, for example.

During the National Mill Days you can not only visit around 1,200 mills, but also see how grain is milled in many locations. There are also activities for children and you can taste local products.

National Mill Day in Vlissingen

You can also visit a mill in Vlissingen. That is of course the Oranjemolen. This mill is a flour mill and former peeling mill on the Oranjedijk in Vlissingen. The mill is open on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

You can also visit windmills near Vlissingen. One of these, for example, is the Pere in East Souburg. This mill was once a grain mill. Now there is a pet shop. The mill is open on both days when the sails are turning.

There are two types of mills in the Netherlands: the polder mill and the industrial mill. Polder mills were built in the west and north of the Netherlands from the 15th century to pump away excess water. Industrial mills were used to grind grain, saw wood or extract oil from seeds.
