Peugeot gives a 12,000 euro discount in Australia: price reduction also in the Netherlands?

--

There is currently a heated price war going on in Australia for electric cars. For example, Peugeot simply trims a third of the price of the Peugeot e-2008. Can such huge discounts also come to the Netherlands?

Peugeot fetches Down Under $20,000 off the price of the compact SUV. Australian dollars that is. Converted, this amounts to more than 12 grand in euros, meaning Australians only pay 24,500 euros for the e-2008. The French do this to better compete against Chinese brands in particular. Due to the discount, the price is now comparable to that of cars such as the GWM Ora (22,000 euros), the BYD Dolphin (23,800 euros) and the MG ZS (24,500 euros).

Electric is cheaper than petrol

Remarkably, the Peugeot e-2008 is now also cheaper than the version with a petrol engine. In addition, Australian customers receive the GT version as standard with the EV, including a panoramic roof, 18-inch alloys, a 10-inch touchscreen and digital instruments. This is the version with the ‘old’ Stellantis drivetrain of 136 hp. The new version with the more powerful motor is not yet on the market in Australia.

More price cuts

This is certainly not the first example of a significant price reduction for an EV in the country. For example, BYD recently removed almost 5,000 euros from the price of the BYD Atto 3, and Tesla has also pushed down its Australian prices. The Model Y has become between 2,700 and 5,200 euros cheaper, and the Model 3 has been reduced in price to 2,500. So it seems that brands are following each other in the battle for the signature of potential customers.

Peugeot e-2008 too expensive

The Peugeot e-2008 costs at least 39,270 euros in the Netherlands. As far as we are concerned, the Dutch importer is following an example of its Australian colleagues, because this is simply too expensive in the segment in which the EV is located.

For example, capable competitors like the Volvo EX30 (from 36,795 euros), the Hyundai Kona Electric (from 36,995) and the MG ZS (34,490) a lot cheaper. There are also a number of affordable competitors, such as the Kia EV3. The Peugeot e-2008 could therefore use a price reduction, but an amount of 12,000 euros does not seem unlikely in the Netherlands.
