Geese in the Zeeland Natura 2000 areas are at risk of being captured and gassed from the end of this week. The Board of Provincial Executive has given permission for this.

The main reason is that the geese cause an incredible amount of damage to agricultural crops, says deputy Wilfried Nielen (nature, BBB). “It’s running out of control.” According to him, it is important that the goose population goes down. A different method of combating the disease is now being discussed with other provinces, according to Nielen.

The Zeeland Fauna Management Unit Foundation had applied for a permit to capture geese and have them gassed. A response from Bird Protection Netherlands has led to a number of regulations in the permit being tightened. For example, more distance must be kept from certain breeding and resting birds in Natura 2000 areas. An ecologist monitors the effects of the goose trapping actions. These may take place from May 10 in the Natura 2000 areas of Grevelingen, Krammer-Volkerak, Oosterschelde, Veerse Meer, Westerschelde & Saeftinghe, Zoommeer, Canisvliet and Vogelkreek.
