The Middelburg municipal council will make a recommendation for the new mayor tonight

Middelburg – On Tuesday, May 7, 2024, the Middelburg municipal council will make a recommendation for the appointment of the new mayor of the municipality of Middelburg, at the proposal of the confidential committee. This happens during a public council meeting that starts at 9 p.m. The city council meets earlier that evening during a closed council meeting. In this closed meeting, the confidential committee reports on the application procedure and explains who, in their opinion, is eligible for the mayor’s office in Middelburg. There will then be a secret vote on this recommendation and the municipal council will then determine who it will recommend as the new mayor. The name of this candidate will then be announced at the subsequent public council meeting at 9 p.m. The public council meeting can be followed via a livestream or in the stands of the council chamber in the city office. Further procedure If the candidate has been nominated by the city council, the Minister of the Interior carries out an extensive screening. For example, the AIVD security service conducts investigations and tax investigations take place. If all this is in order, the proposal will be submitted to the Council of Ministers for appointment. This does not happen with all mayoral appointments, but because Middelburg is a provincial capital it does. After this, the way is clear for the appointment by Royal Decree and a festive moment follows: the swearing-in of the new mayor. The King’s Commissioner swears in the new mayor on behalf of His Majesty the King. This is expected to take place at the end of August.
